The Hole

Recently I spent time with a group of miners in the eastern Ukrainian town of Torez. It’s there, a couple hundred yards off the road and through the woods, that these men, young and old, work in an illegal mine, or kopanka, they call “The Hole” in order to make ends meet.

I’ve posted a few photos here. But you can view more photos of the Torez mine at my Flickr page.

Hello. My name is Brenton Lewis and I’m a PCV serving in Torez. This sounds real interesting. How did you get into contact with the miners? If you are ever back in Torez let me know.

  2. Hey Brenton. I wasn’t aware we had a PCV in Torez. I would have looked you up. I went this past weekend with some Ukrainian journalist friends of mine. We have a contact within the miners. If I head back down I’ll certainly let you know. Good luck.

Dangerous looking mine, but then what mine is ever safe, huh? Chris, by any chance did you get a peek inside that dark hole?
